Looking into another’s eyes has always been magically super-charged for me. It’s been the conduit for connection or conflict, synergy and sexual attraction, inspiration and enlightenment.
But, doing so when we are older, six, seven, eight, or more decades into this life is another matter altogether. I experience a rich depth and a poignant texture as I gaze across not only space, but also time.
John Prine penned “Hello In There” in 1971. John encourages us:
So if you’re walkin’ down the street sometime
And spot some hollow, ancient eyes
Please don’t just pass ’em by and stare
As if you didn’t care
Say, “Hello in there, hello”

So many of us find ourselves “in there” these days. Now what do we do?
As we gaze at one another, perhaps we ask…
“Who were you back then?”
“Did we cross paths at Woodstock? The Pentagon demonstration?”
“How has time treated you?”
“What’s changed since 1969?”
“How can we help those younger by reaching back?”
“Are you afraid?”
“Are you ready for what comes next?”
Ready or not, it’s coming. I’ll be here with you. Hello in there.
