We Breathe
–Geoff O’Keeffe
In these empty times
between being together
I hold my breath,
waiting for you,
sometimes for days,
and everything in my world
waits with me.
The still air is hollow and sad.
I wait until your dark eyes
will once again
softly hold mine,
and I see you in front of me,
open and saying yes;
until you enter the room,
talking bright sunshine and
laughing lighting,
leaving me dizzy;
until I walk behind you,
seated at a meeting,
feeling your body’s warmth,
remembering us moving slowly;
until you hand me a paper
and your fingers linger just
a little too long
against mine,
and the future flows between us;
until I finally, joyfully pull you
hard and close to me
and we gasp for air through
smiles that know
we are together,
we are home, and
I can breathe once more.
